Raising Barley and Wheat
Soil Preperation: Soil preperation for Barley and Wheat is the same. A single tillage pass with the offset disk is performed and then the grain crop is planted.
Planting: After the soil is prepared we plant the grain using a grain drill. The Barley we raise is planted only in the pring. The Soft White Wheat we raise can be planted in the spring(Spring Wheat) or the fall(Winter Wheat). The grain is planted in rows 7" apart at a rate of 100 pounds per acre of seed.
Fertilizing: The grain crop is fertilized in the spring at a rate of 200-300 pounds per acre of nitrate.
Weed Control: The grain crop has to be sprayed in May to kill broadleaf weeds that may be growing.
Harvest: Barley and Wheat are harvested the same way. They are harvested using our John Deere grain combine. The combine header direct cuts the grain. Once the header cuts off the grain the cut off portion(the head and part of the stem) is carried to the threshing cylinder where the grain is seperated from the stems and heads. Then it goes to the cleaning area where the chaff and other debris is seperated from the grain. From there it is taken to the grain tank. It is then transferred to our C60 Chevy Truck and taken to storage. Then it is sold.
