"Happy Are Those Who Are Persecuted For Righteousness Sake" said Jesus. Scripture: Read: I Thessalonians 2:13-16, 3:1-5 II Corinthians 1:3-11 As usual, Jesus teaches us something about peace and happiness which goes right against the grain of our usual thoughts about what happiness and contentment really mean. You might logically ask, how is happiness connected with suffering and persecution? From our scripture, in Paul's mind suffering was considered a normal part of the Christian life. Why do you think that beginning with Jesus, and then with all of his followers ever since, that we have been the object of persecution, anger, and hostility? Can you imagine what would happen if we could find sufficient commitment like Christians possessed in the early Church, so that we would be willing to endure anything for the sake of the work and message of Jesus Christ? Ask yourself the question: "If the time ever came that I had to choose between loyalty to Jesus Christ and personal suffering, or injury to my family, how would I react?" |

"IF WE DARED TO LOVE" Scripture: Read: I Corinthians 13 I Thessalonians 3:11-13 Karl Menninger, a noted psychiatrist, states in a recent Book that the future of mankind is totally dependant upon Out society discovering a road to sufficient maturity that We will be enabled to love one another. This word love has many meanings in our times. Certainly love is the central theme of the younger generation. However much that falls under the title of love today, is merely disguised selfishness, lust, anti-war slogans, or freedom from the "establishment." Yet in spite of it's abuse and misuse, young people are right in at least turning to the concept of love for answers to their confused world. Perhaps here is where Christian teenagers can make an important contribution to the "now" generation, because supposed in Jesus Christ we have found the meaning and source of all true love. Where according to our Christian beliefs does love come from? As you read Paul's description of Christian love In Corinthians, how do you sense it differs from modern definitions of the word love? List some of the adjectives which describe Christian love in action. It seems that Paul judged the maturity of the Christian Church in Thessalonians by it's ability to show love. Why is the true standard by which we judge our maturity in Christian living? Where do we find our ability to love? |

"SEX WAS GOD'S IDEA" Scripture: Read: I Thessalonians 4:1-8 I Corinthians 6-12-20 What is the "Christian" attitude towards sex, is probably one of the most important questions a teenager will ask, when he begins to take his commitment to Jesus Christ seriously. Many wrong answers have been given to this question, and perhaps you have been led to believe that the Church is against sex and bodily appetites. Nothing could be further from the truth. The New Testament is very pro sex, and lays down some guidelines by which human beings can achieve the highest experience of sexual satisfaction and meaning. On the basis of your Scripture reading this morning, do you have any answer to the very modern argument that the only guideline for sex is that you should do as you please as long as can do it without hurting anyone, and as long as it brings you and your partner pleasure? Is our Christian faith prudish or "restrictive" when it comes to our sexual appetites? Why did god give us such drives, and then turn around and forbid us to use them? According to our text, sexual intercourse is restricted to the intimacy of holy marriage. Is this God's idea of torturing us, or possibly a guideline toward the only area wherein we can find true sexual meaning and Satisfaction? What does the Church mean when we claim that true sexual freedom and enjoyment can be found when we play the game according to God's rules? If this is so, where can we find the power to live according to these rules? |
