In 1849 Elijah Welch bought 50 acres of land in Fentress County on Big Creek,
Clear Fork of Columbia River at mouth of Laurel Branch. In 1850 he bought
another 600 acres in the same location.The above family was provided from research conducted by Edwin C. Welch,
Montecito, Calif. (letter 14 Aug 1975) and by Paul Welch (family group record,
22 Aug 1977). Mr. June Welch, Dallas, Tex., also sent data, including many
descendants of the above family [27 Oct 1987].

Lawrence and Martin Counties. John Swan's family was listed in the 1850
census of Bond Co., Ill. (#462/472) He owned a tract of land there, valued at
$600. In 1860 his land in Mercer County, Mo. was valued at $1600. John made
his will in Mercer County on 29 Nov 1862, as follows:"In the name of God amen I John Swan of Mercer County and State of Missouri,
do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form
following. First I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God And my
worldly estate I give and devise as follows. First, I give. . .my wife
Catherine Swan and her assigns for and during her natural life all my property
both real personal and mixed. After the death of my beloved wife Catherine
Swan I give and devise first to my daughter Hannah Widener fifty dollars Also
I give unto my granddaughter Lucy Swan one dollar Also I give unto my
granddaughter Druzilla Netherly one dollar Also I give unto my grandson
George Washington Netherly one dollar and finally all the rest. . .of my
estate. . .I do give. . .unto my three sons Jesse Swan, William Swan and
Benjamin Swan. . .and equal portion And I do hereby appoint my son Jesse
executor. . ."
